Cultural Competency Training
for
Medical and Mental Healthcare Professionals
Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council
Department of Human Services
Overview
As our society becomes more diverse and global, it is imperative that medical and mental healthcare professionals provide services that are patient centered and culturally sensitive. Statistics has proven that cultural insensitivity leads to alarming health disparities that are preventable.
The Cultural Competency Training for Medical and Mental Healthcare Professionals will provide training in Clinical, Systemic, and Organizational Cultural Competencies to address this need. The purpose of these trainings is to ultimately eliminate health disparities by improving the quality of care within healthcare systems.
To do this we are focusing our trainings on using patient centered techniques that are culturally competent. These trainings will be administered in a didactic and practical format. In the didactic portion of the training, participants will receive a comprehensive instruction on using intercultural humility and intercultural sensitivity to develop relationships and communicate effectively with patients cross-culturally. In the practical portion of the training, the participants will experience scenarios that will allow them to employ the skills they learned in the didactic portion of the training. In the last segment of the training, participants will have the opportunity to go to workshops to get a snapshot of the training concepts at use in the community.
